Understanding the Different Types of Abortions – A Brief Guide

The potential risk of miscarriage is high at the start of a pregnancy. This aspect explains why most miscarriages happen in the first trimester, which refers to the first twelve weeks of the gestation period. This is also the time when you are at the highest risk of miscarriage.

Once you reach the sixth week, this risk drops simultaneously. However, it is important to mention here that complications can occur at any point in the entire pregnancy period.

Early vs. Late Abortion

When it comes to early abortion is the removal of the tissues in the first trimester through pills. However, it is advised to opt for pre abortion screening to determine the medical and health conditions that could potentially influence the abortion process.

In case of a late abortion, which occurs after the twenty-fourth week of pregnancy, often includes a surgical procedure and is performed at a clinic or hospital.

Spontaneous Abortion

This abortion is also known as a miscarriage and refers to the death of the fetus before the completion of twenty weeks of pregnancy. There can be several underlying causes for spontaneous abortion, such as the following:

  • Uterine Adhesions
  • Chromosome Issues
  • Thyroid-Related Illnesses
  • Tobacco Smoking
  • Infectious Agents
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Abnormal Fetal Growth

You should know that a spontaneous abortion doesn’t mean that it was caused by something that you did.

Induced Abortion

The intentional removal of embryos, which is a common occurrence in unwanted pregnancies, is also a hot topic of debate about whether or not induced abortion should be legal. According to the report, nearly 40% of unwanted or unintended pregnancies end with induced abortion.

Nearly 90% of induced abortions are performed during the first trimester.

Threatened Abortion

The most noticeable sign of threatened abortion is marked by vaginal bleeding, which occurs in the first trimester. Threatened abortion can be a sign of possible miscarriage. On that note, if you are pregnant and want to diminish the chances of miscarriage, you might want to do the following:

  • Consume a healthy diet
  • Avoid smoking while you are pregnant
  • Avoid alcohol while you are pregnant
  • Opt for regular exercise
  • Delimit your caffeine intake
  • Incorporate stress management exercises
  • Take medicines that are prescribed by the doctor

Speaking of threatened abortion, there is also an inevitable abortion, which is accompanied by cervix dilation, intense cramps, and intense vaginal bleeding.

Complete Abortion

This abortion type usually happens during the eighth week of the pregnancy when all the tissues leave the body through the vagina with bleeding. On the contrary, when it comes to incomplete abortion, it is about the situation when some of the tissues leave the body and some products stay in the body.

Recurring Abortion

If a potential mother experiences three consecutive miscarriages in twenty weeks – it is known as recurrent abortion. In case of a recurring abortion, you might want to brutally assess your lifestyle and detect what you are doing wrong and what you can improve.

For instance, you might have to quit smoking tobacco altogether, or you might want to make better lifestyle choices. Also, keep your stress level in check.
